Designers are very much misunderstood in our culture because we have this ethic of purpose and utility. I think that our concept of designers is that they’re lazy somehow and that they don’t want to work hard. In fact, what I discovered in working with designers is that most of them are not doing it because they want to be the next Leonardo da vinci. They’re doing it at huge personal expense and struggling to keep a practice going while trying to figure out how to make ends meet. They’re not designing because they want to make money, they create because they have something to say that they want to share with the world. Note rappers, musicians and models are not designers but that is not to condemn their way of living. Cutting up denim and bleaching shirts doesn’t constitute creativity.
